Sacred Sword

A blade of pure sunlight, drawn from the goddess's brush and swung against the darkness.

Sacred Sword

The Sacred Sword is the primary melee manifestation of the Celestial Brush in Okami, expressed through the Sun stroke (日). Rather than a separate physical weapon, it is a celestial power channeled through Amaterasu's brush, conjuring a blazing golden blade of condensed sunlight that she wields in close combat. It is the first stroke the player learns and remains the backbone of every fight throughout the game.

In the painted world of Nihon, where divine forces shape reality through calligraphic strokes, the Sacred Sword represents the raw, cutting aspect of the sun goddess's power. It is the tool Amaterasu uses to cleave through corrupted yokai, break obstacles, and carve paths through the ink-washed landscapes she traverses on her quest to restore the Eight Sacred Claws.

Lore & Background

In the mythic framework of Okami, the Celestial Brush is an artifact of immense divine authority, capable of reshaping the world through the act of painting. Each stroke corresponds to a fundamental force of nature, and the Sun stroke is the most primal of them all. Where other strokes call elemental forces from the environment, the Sun stroke is the goddess's own essence made manifest—a focused lance of radiance that cuts as cleanly as a forged blade.

The Sacred Sword is not stored in a sheath or hung on a wall. It exists only in the moment of the stroke: a flash of gold, a whoosh of displaced air, a clean severance. In the sumi-e aesthetic of the game, the slash appears as a bold, confident brushmark—thick at the center, tapering at the tips—leaving a brief golden trail before dissolving into scattered light particles. It is the visual signature of Amaterasu in combat, the one image most associated with her across the game's art.

Within the broader narrative, the Sacred Sword is a reminder that the goddess's power is not merely creative or restorative. The sun that nourishes the rice fields and illuminates the world can also cut, burn, and destroy. Amaterasu wields this duality without hesitation, her golden blade a necessary answer to the corruption that has darkened the land since the Eight Sacred Claws were stolen.

In Their Own Story

The forest was wrong. The trees stood in a grey, lifeless hush, their leaves the color of old ash, and the air tasted of rust. Amaterasu pressed her nose to the bark of a dead oak and felt nothing—no pulse, no whisper of sap. Somewhere beyond the treeline, a yokai's laughter rolled like distant thunder.

She circled her brush in the air, felt the familiar warmth gather at the tip, and drew a single, decisive stroke. The Sacred Sword bloomed from the brush in a flash of molten gold, and the world held its breath for one heartbeat. Then she swung.

The slash parted the darkness like silk. The yokai shrieked, its form splitting along a clean golden line, and where it fell, color bled back into the leaves—green, then gold, then the deep amber of a late afternoon sun. Amaterasu let the blade dissolve into motes of light and trotted forward, her tail high, into the slowly waking forest.

Reader's Guide

The Sacred Sword (Sun stroke) is your default and most frequently used attack. Tap the attack button once for a quick horizontal slash, or hold and release for a more powerful charged swing. In rapid succession, it forms short combos that keep pressure on enemies without committing to a longer animation.

Visually, the slash renders as a bold golden brushstroke that arcs through the air, leaving a brief trail of sparkling particles. On hit, enemies flash white and are knocked back slightly, and the slash mark lingers for a fraction of a second before fading. Against large or armored foes, the charged version breaks through defenses that the quick slash cannot.

Strategically, the Sacred Sword is your bread-and-butter tool. Use it to chip away at standard yokai, to interrupt their attack animations, and to clear small groups quickly. It also serves in exploration: certain environmental obstacles—tangled vines, cracked stone barriers, or corrupted growths—can be severed with a well-placed slash, opening new paths without needing a more specialized stroke.

Because it requires no meter and has no cooldown, the Sacred Sword is always available. Pair it with the Wind stroke for a quick reposition, or follow up with Fire or Lightning for burst damage on tougher enemies. It is the stroke you will use more than any other in the game, and mastering its timing and range is the foundation of effective combat.
