They gave her a Case — a carefully crafted container that organizes, protects, and channels the full spectrum of divine brushstrokes. Fire, Water, Lightning, Wind, Life, Sky, Earth, Sun, Moon, Star, and the more esoteric strokes all find their place within its folds, each one a fragment of the creative principle that once shaped the world from nothing.

The Case is not merely a storage box. In the mythology of Okami, it represents the discipline of creation itself: raw power must be chosen, directed, and committed to the canvas of the world with intention. Amaterasu cannot simply flood the land with every stroke at once; she must decide, moment by moment, which tool to draw from the Case and where to apply it. This constraint is what makes her work an act of art rather than mere force.

As the story unfolds and new brushstrokes are unlocked — often through the intervention of other gods or the completion of specific trials — the Case grows fuller. Each addition is a narrative beat, a reminder that the wolf is being progressively empowered to meet the ever-larger threats that plague the Shattered Land. By the game's climax, the Case holds the full breadth of celestial creation, and Amaterasu's choices within it carry the weight of the world's fate.

In Their Own Story

The evening wind carried the scent of crushed plum blossoms across the ridge. Amaterasu sat with her back against a weathered stone, her amber eyes half-closed, one paw resting on the worn leather of the Brush Case. Around her, the ink-wash hills rolled in silence, their edges soft as a half-remembered dream.

She unrolled the Case slowly, the way a scroll is opened in a quiet study. The brushstrokes lay in their ordered rows — the crack of Lightning, the slow curl of Wind, the patient green of Life. She traced her nose along them, feeling the faint hum of each one, the way a musician runs a finger over strings before a performance.

Somewhere below, in the valley she had not yet reached, the Great Serpent coiled its shadow across the river. She would need Sky. She would need Star. She would need every stroke the Case could give her, and still perhaps not enough.

She rolled the Case shut, the leather creaking softly, and stood. The wolf's shadow stretched long across the ink-dark grass, and the world waited for her next mark.

Reader's Guide

The Celestial Brush Case is opened in-game via a dedicated menu button, presenting a scroll-like interface where all discovered brushstrokes and tools are listed. You can arrange them into a limited set of active slots (typically six), meaning you must strategically choose which powers to carry at any given moment. Swapping strokes in and out is free and instant, so you can adapt on the fly.

In combat, you select a brushstroke from the Case and then paint it directly onto enemies or the environment. Fire scorches, Lightning chains between targets, Water drowns, and Wind pushes foes off ledges or clears fog. Some strokes like Life heal Amaterasu or revive allies, while others like Sky create platforms or clear obstacles. Ink is the shared fuel resource; every stroke you paint consumes a portion, so reckless spraying will leave you empty-handed at a critical moment.

For exploration, the Case is indispensable. The Earth stroke flattens terrain, the Water stroke fills pits, the Sun stroke banishes darkness, and the Moon stroke reveals hidden paths. The Star stroke can be used to create temporary footholds in the air. Learning to chain two or three strokes in quick succession — for example, Water to create a pool, then Lightning to electrify it — is a core tactical skill that separates casual play from efficient puzzle-solving.

The Case also houses utility items such as the Brush (for standard painting), Ink refills, and special tools unlocked through side stories. Keeping your active slots organized for the biome you are currently in — swapping in Sun and Earth for a dark cavern, or Wind and Lightning for an open battlefield — is the single most impactful habit for smooth progression.
